13. Small Gum

Small Gum
51 cm (w) x 40 cm (h), oil paints on stretched paper.
Date produced: 1983-1986.

Painted entirely on-site, on the side of what was then called Burbridge Road, at West Beach (it is now called Sir Donald Bradman Drive). Here, I’ve tried to work very directly and boldly from the colours and structure that I saw directly within a little gum tree growing on the side of the road. This particular gum tree had large red gum nuts. I needed several sessions (at the same time of the day, on several days with similar weather conditions) to achieve this result. This result is a combination of using Monet's "en plein air" approach with van Gogh's deliberate prominent strokes of thick paint.
