14. Flickering Poplar Leaves

Flickering Poplar Leaves
40 cm (w) x 55 cm (h), oil paints on linen canvas.

Here, I am trying to capture the movements of the clouds, the movements of the tree in the breeze and the flickering leaves.

This painting was produced entirely on-site, during sessions of about an hour and a half at the same time over several days of similar weather conditions. The tree was growing in a small park that was surrounded by quiet roads and houses.

The resulting painting ended up with quite thick paint within the tree. I eventually painted the sky over most of the background that I had developed in the painting, because the sky was felt to be more important than the background that I had (houses that were behind the real tree). It is interesting to compare this painting with an earlier one of a poplar in the breeze. I believe this painting shows good improvement in the expressions of the tree in the breeze and the clouds in the sky.
