A Selection of Abstract Designs
Drawn Using InkScape (or Adobe Illustrator) - Page 1 (of 2)

The precision drawings produced using my programs written for Processing 3 were very good accurate constructions, but the more complex images were taking quite a lot of work to program and check. I was also thinking about how various designs could be more easily realised by combining layers of simpler constructions. I turned to trying to create some of these drawings using InkScape, a freely available vector graphics program that is similar to Adobe Illustrator.

Each of the images shown on this page was rendered in InkScape from a Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) file. These vector graphics files contain mathematically defined versions of the designs that can be enlarged to any size you would like, with no degradation in line quality. They could be printed out as posters or billboards and still have very clean sharp lines, and excellent precision.

It is exciting seeing the precision and geometry of these images. A border of mid grey was set up on a master file, so that all of the developed designs had a grey border outlining the designs. InkScape enabled me to develop the designs using combinations of many layers of shapes. The program allows me to switch on or switch off any layer I wish to see, or hide. I found that I could easily explore trying various combinations of many layers, using a layer combining mode that would reverse the tones for overlapping shapes. For these designs, I only used black and white tones (with the grey border surrounding each design).

From my programs developed using Processing 3, I created an SVG file that could be loaded into InkScape and that contained all of the dividing lines within my scheme's main square. It divides the main square into 3,584 smaller triangles that were coloured either black or white. This is the resulting design.

This is an enlarged design of one of the 8 x 8 units from the design of all possible triangles (just before this design).

This is a complex design, made from a combination of about 8 layers of simpler designs, where overlapping shapes are reversed in tone.
