The written information (which had to be limited to 25 words or less) provided for the SALA Festival program was:
The first sentence mentions that this is a personal gallery. I operate and pay for the operation of this web gallery myself. I have done so since 1997. On my web gallery, I show only my own artwork. I upload and maintain all of the files for my web gallery site, write all of the html code required for the web pages, produce all of the images of my artwork, etc. The first sentence also says that I prefer to produce my artwork outdoors “directly from his subjects (“en plein air”)”. I am strongly influenced by the artworks of the French and Australian Impressionist artists as well as the French Post-Impressionist artists: artwork by artists such as Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley, Eugene Boudin, Camille Pissarro, Edouard Manet, Tom Roberts, Arthur Streeton, Paul Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cézanne, etc. All of these artists produced superb artwork outdoors, directly from real subjects (“en plein air”). Early on in my experiments into drawing and painting, I tried doing some artwork outside, directly from real subjects, and felt strong positive values in working in this way. I enjoy being outdoors. I enjoy seeing the real world, and responding directly to it. I feel a direct connection with the real world around me when I work in this way. This is how I have produced the vast majority of the representational pieces shown in this web gallery, whether they are based on recording/expressing light, recording/expressing colours, recording/expressing 3-dimensional forms, recording/expressing vast landscape spaces, etc. Please note that working outside directly from real subjects (“en plein air”) is not easy, and it demands a lot of self-discipline and planning. Over the years, I have noticed that many artists say they have produced specific artwork “en plein air” but it is clear to me that they have not.
The second sentence that I provided for the SALA Festival program indicates that I have been producing serious artwork over a span of 45+ years. I am currently 65 years old. I started producing serious artwork when I was still at High School. I show here, some examples of serious artwork I produced when I was in High School. I have been producing serious artwork all throughout my adult life. I have never received any money from any level of government to produce my artwork (although I have applied a few times). I have received some occasional prize money from competitions that I have entered (including The Waterhouse Art Prize, The Heysen Art Prize, The Park Lands Art Prize, The Dobell Art Prize, and others), and received some money from selling some of my artwork (but I generally don't do my artwork just to sell it). I have worked throughout my adult life doing jobs such as Graphic Artist, Cleaner, School Teacher, School Support Officer, or IT Officer to earn a living. Doing my artwork has been an activity that I have done around the commitments required for earning a living, and for being in a happy marriage relationship. I have done my artwork with full support from my wife. When I could, I worked just 4 days a week, instead of 5 days a week (which is why, in later years, I moved to working as a School Support Officer or IT Officer).
Suggestions on how to start viewing the artwork on my Web GalleryStart by visiting the pages for the images shown above, and returning to this page by using the back button on your web browser. I show a display of 12 of my best pieces here. Most of these pieces required months of work to produce. I hope that viewers can see from looking at the pieces in this web gallery that I have developed a set of unique expressions that have been used to create artworks that are unique when compared to the artworks of other artists, whether the other artists are genuinely attempting “en plein air” artwork, or otherwise. I have a display dedicated to explaining my unique expressions. Apart from the displays already suggested, please next consider viewing my One Moreton Bay Fig Tree Project. This project display shows a small selection of pieces produced in a unique art project where I spent two years full-time producing artwork from just one particular Moreton Bay Fig tree, which grows in the Adelaide Park Lands. Please don't rush through the displays in my web gallery. Please just enjoy some pieces and come back another time to view some more. New displays of artwork are shown every month, so please come back regularly. |
